Committed To All Your Flooring Needs. From Carpeting to Vinyl Laminates
SELECTING THE CARPET THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
The first things to consider are the four most common carpet fibers: nylon, polyester, olefin, and wool. Nylon is the most popular carpet fiber due to its overall durability. It is the strongest and most resilient carpet fiber. Polyester is a good option for those on a budget. Modern technology has improved the strength and durability of polyester carpet, but it still comes in second place after nylon. However, it is naturally stain and fade resistant, more so than nylon. Olefin is the least expensive carpet fiber. It is very moisture and stain resistant, making it a popular choice for outdoor carpet applications. Olefin
is less resilient and will crush and show wear more quickly in high traffic areas like hallways and stairs. Mohawk, Shaw, and Beaulieu feature carpet collections with these three types of fiber to fit most any taste and budget. Wool carpet is environmentally friendly in addition to being very strong and resilient. With proper care, wool carpet will look beautiful for many years, even in high traffic areas. It responds very well to cleaning, but is also more prone to staining than most synthetic fibers. Wool carpet also tends to be at the higher end of the price range for carpet.
Another consideration is where the carpet will be installed. High traffic areas of the home such as hallways and family rooms call for the most durable carpet your budget allows. On the other hand, bedrooms, formal dining rooms and dens may not require the same level of durability.
Having children and/or pets is also an important factor. If this is you, look for products with a high level of stain resistance. Stainmaster
is probably the most well known stain protection system. It is built into the carpet fiber as the yarn is manufactured.Stainmasterproducts are available from most carpet manufacturers including Beaulieu, Shaw, and Mohawk. Some other examples of great protection against soiling and staining would be: Shaw’s R2X Stain and Soil Resist System, and Mohawk’sSmart Strand
family of carpets.
Additionally, think about what you like and dislike about the flooring you are planning to replace. Are you looking for carpet with a softer feel or a more contemporary look? How about a carpet that is more environmentally friendly? If this is a concern, look for the Anso Nylon label
on many of the products made by Shaw. Anso Nylon is manufactured in part with post-consumer recycled materials, and the carpet itself is recyclable. The Everstrand
family of carpet fibers from Mohawk is another option, with more than 3 billion plastic beverage bottles recycled into Everstrand carpet fibers annually.
